Our government is completely insane.

There's nothing like doing your taxes to put into perspective how truly fucked up our government has become. I'm paid through my university, and since this is taxable income with taxes taken out every paycheck, I have to file every year just like everyone else. I've worked for multiple schools, and they have this annoying habit of taking out just enough to cover your supposed tax liability if you have no dependents and make no money. But since this was my only job last year, I didn't work any other jobs to make up for the small tax liability that I incurred this year.

Yes, I owe $19 to the imperial federal government and $1 to the State of Alabamastan. I kid you not, one fucking dollar. I don't mind if they took out more than my predicted liability so that I get a refund, even a refund of a dollar. I don't mind if they don't take out any taxes at all, making me pay a hefty sum every year during tax season (though I know those of you that spend every penny of your paycheck would disagree), but the fact that I have to write a check for one dollar, put 41 cents on the envelope, and mail it off to be processed which will cost the state more than that dollar, shows just how amazingly bureaucratic our government has become.

If the government were a business, they would do a cost/benefit analysis (performed by yours truly because I kick ass at those) and realize that at some cutoff, maybe 2 or 3 bucks, that it would not be worthwhile to collect those taxes since the expenditure is greater than revenue collected. For the slow, it means that it does not make sense for anybody to pay 5 bucks to receive one (if you disagree, I'd be more than happy to make your wallet lighter while I'm at it). But because the government is better at wasting money than a drunken me, this will never happen.

In light of yet another example of the government wasting money, particularly on this scheme of taxation, I would like to take the time to tell you to visit FairTax.org, which proposes abolishing the IRS (and subsequently states' versions of the IRS), eliminates payroll taxes, and eliminates the stress out of doing taxes every year. I don't think that the Fair Tax will ever be implemented, but I think we can all dream of a world without 1040's and being scared of getting audited by some asshole in a suit that makes 4 times your salary.
